Siberian Ginseng Extract Benefits

Though not a true ginseng, Siberian ginseng is also known for its therapeutic properties. Here is a brief overview about its health benefits.
You might have head about Siberian ginseng, a herb that is fast gaining popularity in many regions of the world. Though, it is known as Siberian ginseng, this herb is not a true ginseng that belongs to the Panax genus in the family Araliaceae.
Siberian ginseng is a woody shrub with a scientific name of Eleutherococcus senticosus. This plant, which is also known as eleuthero, belongs to the genus Eleutherococcus, in the family Araliaceae. Unlike Panax ginseng plant, Siberian ginseng is woody as well thorny. In both these plants, roots are used for medicinal purposes.
While the roots of Siberian ginseng are found to be woody in nature, in case of Panax species, they are fleshy. Even the active compounds in the roots of both plants are different. True ginseng roots contain compounds called ginsenosides, whereas Siberian ginseng has eleutherosides.
But, Siberian ginseng is said to have properties that are similar to that of true ginseng, as eleutherosides are also adaptogens, like ginsenosides. So, Siberian ginseng is also widely used in the form of dried root, root powder, capsule, tablet, tincture, extract, etc.


Siberian Ginseng is not a true ginseng, but, is used extensively for its health benefits. This plant is native to Northeast Asia, particularly, some parts of Japan, China and Russia. This herb has been used in the traditional Chinese medicine throughout the centuries, and is now popular across the globe.
Supplements prepared from Siberian ginseng roots are sold as eleuthero or Siberian ginseng.
  • As mentioned earlier, Siberian ginseng is also classified as an adaptogen and is said to be useful in recuperating the body from stress, anxiety, trauma, etc. In short, it is often used as a rejuvenating herb.
  • Siberian ginseng is said to be highly beneficial in boosting the immune system. It is also used for improving memory and concentration.
  • Apart from improving mental performance, even physical stamina is said to be increased with use of Siberian ginseng extract.
  • It is also used for remedying female and male infertility. In case of females, menstrual irregularities and problems associated with menopause, are treated with this herb.
  • According to certain studies, this ginseng extract may prove useful in hindering replication of viruses responsible for causing various diseases, especially, cold and influenza. It has been suggested that regular use of this herb may be useful in reducing the frequency of herpes simplex virus outbreaks.
  • As this herb is believed to be useful in regulating blood circulation, it is also used in treating high blood pressure. Apart from that, Siberian ginseng is also used for treating diabetes.
  • This herb is also said to be good for the heart and in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Even those, who are in the initial stages of Alzheimer's disease may benefit from this herb, as it is said to boost mental performance.
  • It has been suggested that Siberian ginseng may protect the body against certain types of cancer. Apart from that, it may also be useful in treating bone marrow suppression caused by chemotherapy.
  • Siberian ginseng extract benefits include its use as an anti aging agent. It fights signs of aging and so, is found as an ingredient in various anti aging formulas.
In short, Siberian ginseng is one of those herbs with various health benefits. But, there are certain possible side effects that may be experienced by some users. These include, headaches, drowsiness, muscle spasms, nosebleeds, nervousness, anxiety, confusion, increased heart rate, chest pain, high blood pressure, etc.
In case you experience any such symptoms, discontinue the use of this herb. Siberian ginseng may also interact with certain prescription drugs, like, those for heart diseases. So, it is always better to use this herb, as per the instructions of a qualified herbal practitioner. You have to stick to the prescribed dosage as well as the duration of use.
Even though, long-term use of Siberian ginseng extract is not found to be unsafe, some herbalists recommend to discontinue its use for a few weeks, before starting it again.
If you are a person with obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy or high blood pressure, it is always better to avoid this herb. Even kids, pregnant and nursing women must avoid using this extract.
Another important factor to be noted is that you must buy this herb from authentic and trusted manufacturers, as there are several adulterated products in the market. Such products may also lead to side effects.
