Puffy Eyelids

Puffy or baggy eyelids make a person look sad and tired. Here are remedies to get rid of them.

Puffy eyelids syndrome affects both men and women. It is also one of the most common complaint in children. As the skin around the eyes is very thin and sensitive, puffy eyes and eyelids can be a common problem. It can be caused due to a variety of reasons. Here are the most common as well as some lesser common causes of puffy eyelids.

Causes

Crying is the most common cause of puffy eyes in people. The sodium in the eyelids causes the skin surrounding the eyes to swell, causing puffiness of eyelids, which is easily noticeable. It is also one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Following are the other causes:
  • Dehydration
  • Sleep Deprivation
  • Allergies
  • Heredity
  • Hangover
  • Trauma to the eyes
  • Side effects of makeup
  • Wearing wrong lenses
  • Aging
Treatment
Puffy or swollen eyelids is not a serious medical condition and does not require a serious treatment in most of the cases. Only in rare cases, if it is caused due to trauma or accident, one should consult the ophthalmologist (eye doctor). In these cases, it can be treated through medications and eye drops.
If along with eyelids, eyes and face also looks swollen, one should consult the doctor as it can be a symptom of hypothyroidism. Puffy eyelids in children is mostly due to an allergy, hence, it is very essential to identify the allergen and try to avoid it.
Puffy eyelids in the morning are usually caused due to sleeping in a wrong position. Therefore, it is recommended to sleep with the head elevated a bit from the rest of the body, by using a pillow. Reducing the intake of alcohol and salty foods can also help in reducing the puffiness of eyelids.
Similarly, cleaning and disinfecting contact lenses is very important. Women should also be very careful while using eye makeup and go for trusted products. There are several home remedies that are more effective in treating puffy eyes.
Home Remedies
  • There are several eye gels available in the market that you can use. Keep the gel in the refrigerator for some time till it cools and then apply it your eyelids.
  • Use the similar method with cold compresses. Keep them in the refrigerator for some time and then apply to the eyelids.
  • Placing slices of cool cucumber on eyelids is also an effective home remedy.
  • Soak a cloth or towel in cool water and place it on your eyelids to reduce the puffiness.
  • Soak cotton balls in cold milk and place them on your eyelids.
If none of these above mentioned remedies are helpful, you should consult the doctor. Now that you know the causes of this condition, preventing them can be easier. The most important thing in it is to have adequate amounts of sleep, as puffiness of the eyelids is mostly due to sleep deprivation.
Secondly, one should have a sufficient amount of water every day to prevent dehydration. One should also practice stress management techniques to reduce stress and tensions. And lastly, one can adopt methods like wearing sunglasses and goggles for protecting the eyes!
