Leena Palande
Are you looking for an effective pink eye home remedy? The following story provides a list of simple home remedies and preventive measures for conjunctivitis.
Conjunctivitis, which is commonly known as pink eye, refers to the inflammation of the conjunctiva or the thin membrane that covers the sclera (white section of the eyeball), and the inner surface of the eyelid. It could occur as a result of exposure to bacteria, viruses, or allergens.
The characteristic symptom of this eye condition is reddening of the affected eye. Constant itching of the eye, throbbing pain, stickiness and excessive discharge from the eye are some of the common symptoms of conjunctivitis.
Like any eye ailment, conjunctivitis must also be taken seriously. Besides consulting an ophthalmologist for quick relief, the affected individual can also follow certain tried-and-tested home remedies.

Home Remedies for Pink Eye

The treatment of pink eye usually involves the use of medicated eye drops. The nature of drugs would vary, depending on the causative agent. For instance, antibiotic eye drops are prescribed for treating an infection caused by bacteria. Oral histamines are usually prescribed, if the redness of eye is due to exposure to an allergen.
Following certain self-care measure will also go a long way in reducing the intensity of pain or discomfort.

Cold Compresses: Apply cool compresses to the affected eye as many times as possible. Dip a clean washcloth in cold water, and apply it on the affected eye.
Saline Water: You may use warm saline water for hot compresses. First soak the washcloth in warm water and gently dab it over the eyelids. You may continue doing this for about 10 minutes. Then, take another washcloth and dip it in ice-cold water. Place an ice cube in the cloth and place it over the infected eye for another 10 to 15 minutes.

Warm Compresses: Lavender oil, chamomile oil, or rose oil can also be used for warm compresses. Add a few drops of oil to warm water for soothing effect. Use a warmed up washcloth for warm compresses. Use warm, wet compresses to soften the crusted material, especially after waking up in the morning.
Cold Tea Bags: Keep some dampened chamomile tea bags (green tea or black tea bags will also do) in freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. Place them over the infected eye. This will offer instant relief from pain and itching sensation.
Honey: Add 1 teaspoon of honey to half cup of water and put two drops of the solution in each eye. This may result in stinging sensation, but you should keep on adding drops several times throughout the day. It will help reduce pain and inflammation. However, make sure that you use pure honey.
Washing the Eyes: Eyes can be flushed with a mixture of warm water and a little bit of baby shampoo. A drop of castor oil in each eye once a day can help get rid of infection quickly.
Cleanliness: Always use cotton balls while applying any mixture to the eyes. Wash your hands with an antiseptic handwash after touching your eyes. Change and wash your bed sheet, pillow cover, and towel separately. Do not share your towel or eye drops with anybody.
Soothing Solutions: Boil some water after adding some fennel seeds to it and use it for compresses when it reaches normal temperature. Or you may soak some jasmine flowers and chamomile in water overnight and use the water (after straining) next morning.
