For a cup of ginger tea, mix a teaspoon of grated ginger root in water (a little more than a cupful) and add two cloves of garlic and lemon. Bring the water to a boil and reduce the heat. Let it simmer for fifteen minutes, before you take it off heat.
Sipping on the hot ginger tea, not only helps in curing the symptoms, but also helps in opening up the nasal passages. You can also add aniseed tea to reduce the mucus.
Inhaling steam is also known to relieve cough and its symptoms in an effective manner. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus or tea tree oil to the hot water, while taking steam drains excess mucus and clears the nasal passage. This remedy can be taken by children and elders alike.
In addition to these remedies, you can use alternative natural cough suppressant for children, like feeding the child chicken soup. Apart from this, placing a humidifier in his/her room will help to clear the blocked nasal passages and provide relief from the coughing.
