Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass essential oil has a fresh and strong lemony smell. This oil is cheap and easily available, and has many properties that have been used to make remedies for various problems.
Before we start discussing the lemongrass essential oil benefits, let us understand the important properties of lemongrass and some cautions one need to keep in mind while using this oil. By understanding the therapeutic properties of an essential oil, you can use it for multiple purposes. Also, it is important to remember the cautions while using this product, to prevent any health issues.

Properties

Lemongrass oil is antiseptic and antibiotic. Hence, it can be used to clean wounds. It is stimulating, antidepressant, analgesic and refreshing, which is why it makes a good aromatherapy oil, because it has a strong smell that is sweeter than lemon essential oil. It can also be used as a deodorant.
One of the most used and known property of this essential oil is that, it is an insect repellent. This way you can add it to other products, and make your own natural mosquito repelling blends.

Cautions

Though, there are no side effects of lemongrass oil. One still needs to follow certain guidelines while using essential oil. Never use concentrated essential oil on your skin. Mix it with a cream, gel or a light carrier oil, then only use it. If using it as a bug repellent, then mix it with a cream or oil and then use it, or spray few drops on your clothes to repel bugs. I mix lemongrass oil with aloe gel, and use it as a natural insect repellent.
Aloe helps to soothe skin, and insect bites; when combined with lemongrass oil, it acts as an effective insect repellent. You can add 2-3 drops of pure lemongrass oil to 10 drops of any carrier oil like jojoba oil or olive oil and then use it, or add few drops of lemongrass oil to a cream and then apply the cream on your skin. If you are adding it to a bathtub, then make sure you swish the water well after adding this oil.

Uses

  • To use this oil for massage, mix it with a carrier oil like almond oil or olive oil and enjoy. You can also use this blend as great skin moisturizer everyday. After bathing, apply this mix on complete body, for deep moisturizing. Lemongrass oil will not just keep your skin supple and moisturized, but when used regularly, it can help to improve the skin's elasticity.
  • Lemongrass oil is used to heal many skin disorders like scabies and ringworm. Mix 4 drops of lemongrass oil with 10 drops of jojoba oil and then apply on the infected skin regularly, to heal the skin naturally. If your skin is sensitive then use lesser concentration of lemongrass oil.
  • To use it as a bug repellent in a household, you can add some drops of lemongrass oil to a spray nozzle bottle containing water, and spray it in a room, to keep the mosquitoes away.
  • If you are experiencing headache then put a drop on each temple, to get rid of the headache.
  • As lemongrass is antibacterial, you can mix it with cleansing milk or other cleansing product and use it to clean acne prone skin.
  • When suffering from sore throat, boil water in a pot then add some drops of essential oil to the water and inhale the steam.
  • Lemongrass blends well with other essential oils like lavender, geranium, peppermint, rosemary, ylang ylang, frankincense, thyme, cinnamon, basil and jasmine oil. So, you can add it to these essential oils and create your own personalized aromatic blends.
  • When making homemade soaps, add some lemongrass oil and few crushed leaves of dried lemongrass to a glycerin soap base. You will have a soap that has great stimulating and refreshing essence, and see through the glycerin an interesting pattern of lemongrass leaves.
