Indian Gooseberry or amla is one of the most useful fruits known to man. It is predominantly an Indian fruit. Read this story to know more about how you can benefit from it.
The Indian gooseberry is one fruit which can be used in any form. Be it fresh or dried, pickled or juiced, every form of this fruit has so many uses that we can't stop wondering. This story will give you a glimpse of the Indian gooseberry and also some of its benefits.

The Plant

The Indian gooseberry plant is native to India, though it is also grown in other Asian countries. The state of Uttar Pradesh in north India is the largest producer. The tree is short to medium height and has a moderately wide-spreading branching pattern.
The flowers are yellowish green in color. The berries are small and light green in color. They have 6 vertical grooves on them. The taste of the fruit can be described as tangy, bitter, pungent or a combination of all.

Benefits

Ayurveda

Since early ages, amla has been known for its medicinal uses. Ayurveda, the branch of traditional Indian medicine highlights its many uses. It is a useful treatment for indigestion as it cools any stomach inflammation that mat occur due to spicy foods.

Cholesterol

Indian gooseberry helps to dilate blood vessels. This in turn reduces blood pressure and thus brings the cholesterol level down.

Diabetes

Since it is a rich source of vitamin C, it helps in regulating the blood sugar level too. Adding a spoon of amla juice to a daily glass of bitter gourd juice can work wonders in increasing the levels of insulin secreted by the pancreas. You can also add the powdered fruit to a mixture of jamun powder and bitter gourd juice.

Metabolism

Indian gooseberry helps in easy absorption of food and helps in formation of the necessary digestive juices to help in easy and quick digestion of food.

Eye Problems

A combination of honey and Indian gooseberry juice is a great remedy for eye problems like conjunctivitis, intra ocular tension (pressure in the eye) and glaucoma. It also helps to improve eyesight.

Appetite

To improve or increase appetite, have a spoon of powdered amla with honey or butter. It will help in regulating the level of nitrogen in the body and balances the acids in the stomach as well.

Respiratory Problems

Regular intake of amla prevents the lungs from getting dried up. It also helps in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and tuberculosis (of the lungs). In addition, it also helps in minimizing the risk of respiratory tract cancer.

Heart Problems

One of the best uses of Indian gooseberry is that it maintains a healthy heart and helps prevents heart diseases. Consuming it keeps the heart muscles strong and supple. It also helps in increasing the immunity of the body by strengthening the different organs. This helps the body to resist infectious diseases and also helps to prevent nervous disorders.

Stomach Problems

Since it has highly anti-inflammatory properties, it can help in problems like constipation or gastritis and hemorrhoids. It also helps in balancing the stomach acids and keeping it clean and free of toxins.

Anti Aging

This fruit is rich in anti oxidants. It also has revitalizing and energy-releasing nutrients like minerals and vitamins. Hence, it helps to maintain the body strength and keeps it fit and healthy.

Hair Care

You can make a paste by combining its powder with olive oil and yogurt and keep it in your hair for an hour and wash it off. Or else, you can use an amla oil or one that contains it before shampooing your hair. It is fabulous for hair care as it acts a great cleanser, conditioner, and moisturizer. You can also soak the dried fruit in coconut oil for a week or ten days and then give yourself a relaxing head massage. Then shampoo your hair. It will strengthen your hair and also prevent the occurrence of premature graying of your hair.

Rheumatism and Scurvy

Powdered amla with jaggery (2 x 30 days) for rheumatism and powdered amla with sugar (1 tsp) added to milk (3 x 30 days) helps in the treatment of scurvy.

Diarrhea/Dysentery

Lemon juice and sugar candy, with a spoon full of amla powder is an effective remedy for diarrhea. For dysentery, make a paste of the fruit and have it with buttermilk or honey.
Apart from all these medicinal uses of the Indian gooseberry, it is very healthy to eat at least one everyday. You can have them pickled or you can soak them in sugar syrup for a few weeks and then have one everyday. It is highly nutritious and will make you feel rejuvenated and healthy like never before.
