Chronic coughs have various causes like excessive smoking, respiratory tract infections, side effects of medications, sinusitis, and other such acute disorders.
While you may be undertaking some allopathic treatment for the condition, there are certain things that you can do, besides it, in order to make yourself feel better and give yourself some comfort in the middle of a coughing fit. This story has some of the easiest home remedies for a chronic cough. Try them out, you'll see how easy and efficient they are.
Honey and Black Pepper: For this remedy, take 3 or 4 black pepper seeds and grind them perfectly into a fine powder. Now, take a large tablespoon of honey and add the powdered black pepper to it. Close your eyes and gulp it down quickly because it may not taste very pleasant.
The back pepper can be really spicy for people unaccustomed to it, but the honey will bring the level of spice down with its sweetness. Have this before you go to sleep at night for a night free of coughing fits.
Garlic with Onion Soup: Garlic is one of the most popular home remedies for chronic cough. The best part is it can be used in any form to ease the pain that is caused when the chest hurts while coughing. But the best form is to make a delicious soup using onion and garlic. Simply peel both of them, and add them to boiling water and let them boil for a while. Add salt and pepper to taste. A rather tasty way to drive away the cough, don't you think?
Cinnamon, Lemon Juice and Honey: Take a fresh lemon and squeeze the juice from it. Now, add ¼ spoon of finely ground cinnamon powder in a spoon of honey and add it to the lemon juice. Mix it thoroughly and drink it.
Turmeric Milk: Turmeric is one of the best antiseptics for our body. To get relief from a case of chronic cough, take some milk and add a small spoon of turmeric powder to it. Place it on the stove and bring it to a boil. Take it off the heat, add sugar to taste and drink it before it gets too cold. The turmeric will help to relieve the cough and the warm milk will give you a good night's sleep.
Ginger, Honey and Tulsi: The next remedy uses ½ a ginger, peeled and ground, ½ a spoon of honey and 1 spoon of tulsi (holy basil) juice. Make a paste of these ingredients and consume it at least 2 or 3 times in a day to get relief from chronic cough.
Cumin Soup: This remedy is for those who can handle spicy food well. Grind a spoonful of cumin seeds and some toor dal (split pigeon peas) and keep it aside. Take 2 cups of water, add tamarind juice, turmeric powder and salt to it and let it boil until the raw smell of the tamarind is lost.
When it begins to boil, add the cumin and dal powder to it and let it boil for another 7 minutes. Add at least 3 to 4 cups more water, to give it a very watery consistency. Let it boil. When it begins to foam, you can turn off the stove.
Put some ghee (clarified butter) in a small pan and turn on the heat. Add mustard seeds, asafoetida powder and curry leaves to it. Keep it on the flame till the mustard seeds begin to splutter, then add it to the soup and close the vessel with a lid immediately. Drink this soup before a meal or have it with rice during a meal.
Apple Cider Vinegar, Ginger, Red Pepper, Water and Honey: Here's another paste that can be consumed at least thrice a day. You'll need to take a tablespoon each of apple cider vinegar, water, honey, ¼ teaspoon ginger and red pepper and form a paste with it and gulp it down.
Coconut Milk and Cuscus Grass: Another good home remedy for chronic cough problem can be made by using coconut milk and cuscus grass (khas). Take 3 - 4 spoons of the coconut milk and ½ spoon of dried cuscus grass. Make a mixture and drink it twice daily.
Almonds: Almonds are also a good home remedy for chronic cough. Soak a few almonds in a cup of water for a few hours or overnight. Then skin them and crush them. Add some butter and sugar and form a paste that can be taken thrice a day.
Aloe Vera and Honey: Another slightly disheartening (to taste), but effective home remedy for chronic cough is the combination of aloe vera and honey. Take a spoon of aloe vera juice, add a spoon of honey to it and consume it twice or thrice daily for relief from cough.
Eucalyptus and Mint Leaves Steam: Apart from these oral remedies, you can also try taking the steam of water that has been boiled with fresh eucalyptus and mint leaves in it. Cover your head and take in the vapor that rises from this water and you'll feel immense relief. Be careful to avoid scalding.
These home remedies can be used as complements to your usual treatment for chronic cough, if any. Make sure you consult your physician and inform him when you indulge in these or any other remedies for your ailment.
