Home Remedies for Bronchitis

Bronchitis is a respiratory illness, which may require regular use of medication. That can be tough on our bodies, especially that of a child's. So, here are some effective home remedies for relief from the condition, without taxing the body.
These are some simple home remedies for bronchitis which are pretty effective. My brother who suffers from bronchitis, swears by these. Along with these remedies, one must also take preventive measures to avoid allergic reactions and other triggers of bronchitis.

For Acute Bronchitis

The symptoms of acute bronchitis include cough, running nose, fever, and pain in the chest. The first and foremost step is to alleviate these symptoms. Drinking turmeric mixed in a glass of warm milk can help relieve congestion in the chest.
A mixture of ground ginger, pepper, cloves, and honey can be heated slightly and consumed. Take only one teaspoon at a time. This is a very effective natural remedy for many other respiratory problems. Bay leaf tea is equally effective in treating acute bronchitis. In short, the golden rule is to drink warm fluids.
You can also try ground almond mixed in orange juice, as a long-term measure to curb bronchitis symptoms. Yarrow and marshmallow can be incorporated in the diet, as they are said to be beneficial for preventing the condition.
A bronchial cough is distinguishable, as it is loud and almost hollow, sounding as if one can hear the lungs rattling inside. To treat this cough, one must smoothen the throat, which means avoidance of cold fluids.
Drink loads of lukewarm water and avoid swallowing the phlegm. Consume a teaspoon of honey whenever your throat gets irritated. Tea made from ginger root, clove, and cinnamon is equally beneficial. A teaspoon of raw onion juice, consumed early in the morning, is said to relieve morning cough and congestion.

Remedies for Children

Spinach soup with pepper and ginger is an effective remedy for bronchitis in kids. Incorporate this soup in the child's diet. Prepare a drink using a paste of ground almonds and poppy seeds, mixed with honey and milk.
Let your child consume a glass of this drink everyday, before bedtime. This drink is not only good for bronchitis, but is also good for the functioning of the brain. Daily practice of yoga can also help children with bronchitis. A decoction of fenugreek seeds, along with some ginger and honey is very effective for bronchitis.
You need to boil two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds in a liter of water and let it simmer for half an hour. Once the decoction is prepared, strain it and mix a teaspoon of honey and fresh ginger juice. Consume this drink once during the morning and evening. You can also use a mustard poultice and apply it on the child's chest for 15 to 20 minutes.
Give your child clear chicken soup with ginger and garlic. Even fresh chicken stock with lots of pepper and ginger is good.
Other than these remedies, certain lifestyle and dietary changes are also advisable. Avoid consuming tobacco and excess of caffeine. So, cut down on your smoking, and make sure that you get enough exercise.
Make it a point to go for a walk early in the morning. The fresh air will really make a big difference to your health. Take extra care during seasons when your symptoms worsen. These home remedies will make your immune system stronger and reduce the recurrent bouts of bronchitis.
