What Causes Sore Throat?

There are many reasons why someone can get a sore-scratchy throat. One of the most common reasons is cold. If someone catches a cold, they can quickly get a sore throat as it is a type of viral infection.
Other causes may also include:
  • Viral infections like mumps, mono, or influenza
  • Inflammation of uvula and/or tonsils
  • Allergic reaction to dust, pollution, smoke, or low humidity
  • Laryngitis - infection of voice box
  • Constantly breathing from the mouth
  • Yelling for a long period of time
  • Extremely tired
If the symptoms remain for more than few days, then it is caused due to allergies and/or injuries. Finding the ideal treatment for sore mostly depends on what is the root cause of it in the first place.
However, in the earlier stages, many people have found relief from drinking the tea. At any point, you are in doubt, don't shy away from consulting with your doctor for treatment.

How Does the Tea Help

Many people get an infection along with cold and flu. The use of tea is very common in traditional Chinese medicine. It comes very handy during this time. Basically, the taste of tea is very invigorating. With its spicy flavor, it helps calm the inflammation in the throat. It works by dilating the blood vessels in the throat and giving it a warm sensation.
As I mentioned before, whenever someone has a sore throat, their throat can turn dry and give that burning feeling. That's what the tea is targeting at - to give you relief from this irritation. Sometimes, few people also complain about being nauseated or feeling uncomfortable.
When that individual drinks the tea, it works to reduce the feeling, increase perspiration (if you have a fever), and reduce the soreness in the throat.

Make the Tea

  • To prepare the tea, get the ingredients ready―4 cups water, 2 tablespoons honey, 2 slices of lemon, and ¼ cup fresh ginger root.
  • In a pot, boil the 4 cups of water first. Once the water is ready, cut a piece of fresh ginger root.
  • Cut the piece about 2'' long and 1'' wide. That should be enough for this recipe.
  • Peel the skin off and cut the ginger root into small pieces.
  • Add these pieces to the boiling water and let it simmer properly.
  • Keep the ginger root pieces in it for about 15 minutes or so.
  • Turn the heat off and add lemon juice now. You can even add the lemon juice after you have strained the tea.
  • Mix the tea properly and strain it in a bowl. Save the ginger root pieces.
  • Add the honey in the end and stir till the honey dissolves completely.
  • You can even keep the lemon pieces inside the tea for 4―5 minutes and then strain the tea in the end.
  • When the tea is ready, drink it when it's still warm. Don't wait for it to get cold as it won't work properly.
Even though it may not seem like a serious health condition, the discomfort it brings can be tremendous and a frustrating ordeal. So don't wait for it to clear on its own; there's no need to wait it out. Use the tea to soothe your throat and find relief instantly. You can drink this tea 2―3 times a day.
