Ginger Root Extract

Ginger root extract is a popular herbal medicine used all over the world. It is obtained from ginger root and possesses the qualities of treating several physical ailments.
One of the most famous herbs used since ages, ginger root has the scientific name Zingiber officinale. Ginger or ginger extract is consumed as spices and herbal medicines. Plantation of this multipurpose root was popular in ancient China, India, Rome, and Greece. From there, ginger spread its roots all over the world! Today, it is mostly produced in the Southeast Asia, Caribbean region, and West Africa. Apart from being a popular culinary spice, ginger has innumerable medicinal properties.
Ginger root has been traditionally used as a herbal remedy for various medical conditions. Some of them include:
  • Heart health
  • Menstruation
  • Food poisoning
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Epilepsy
  • Erectile dysfunction
It is also beneficial for many other diseases. The root extract is consumed in numerous forms and in combination with various chemicals as well.

Ginger Root Extract

The standardized amount of the extract can give positive results in following medical conditions:
  • Nausea: It is very useful in treating nausea caused by pregnancy symptoms or any surgery, as well as, due to the ongoing chemotherapy treatment.
  • Inflammation: Ginger root has been traditionally used for the purpose of healing problems related to inflammation, like rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis.
  • Cough and cold: Cineole present in the extract is very useful for the treatment of common cold, bronchitis, and sore throat.
  • Cancer: Not well researched, yet many studies lead to the conclusion that this extract contains anticancer properties. It has shown significant results in the treatment of colon cancer.
Supplements are also available in numerous forms such as extract, oils, capsules, tinctures, powders, and liquids. The aromatic extract that is also available in the form of powder, can be combined with other chemical preservatives. For maximum results, it is always advised to use pure ginger root in the standardized form. Herbalists suggest to use the extract that contains more than 5% of gingerols, which is the most active substance of the root.

Dosage

Though a form of herbal medicine, it must be consumed only in prescribed quantities. In children, it can be used for the treatment of digestive cramping, nausea, and headaches. The dosage should be adjusted according to the amount that is prescribed for adults. It must be in 1/3 proportion with that of the adult dosage.
The extract should never be given to children below 2 years of age. For adults, it is generally recommended that daily consumption should not exceed over 4 gm. So, always take 75 mg to 2000 mg in divided doses with food and other ginger supplements.

Precautions

The extract has been traditionally used to cure many medical conditions in order to strengthen the body. However, as it is with other herbal medicines, ginger root also has its own set of side effects. But, the good thing is that they are very few and are avoidable.
The extract taken in excessive amount may trigger several side effects, such as heartburn, mouth irritation, and diarrhea. People suffering from gallstones, bleeding disorders, or those, who are taking blood thinning supplements must consult their health care provider before consuming this extract.
