The garlic, which is native to central Asia, contains approximately 100 chemicals, right from the very peculiar garlic-smell causing allicin to the anti-cancer chemicals in it. The medicinal properties and health benefits of the herb are known to man for the last 3,000 years.
There are 300 varieties of garlic, which is also known as the 'Smelling Rose'. If man were to make this wonderful thing in his laboratories with all its contents, garlic would have been too costly for a common man to purchase and use for culinary purposes.

Health Benefits of Garlic

Garlic has enjoyed tremendous popularity in Asia and Africa. However, it wasn't too far back in the past, that it was frowned upon for its strong odor in certain parts of the world. This lasted, till the modern science uncovered the benefits of garlic, that were extolled in the folklore.
Garlic, sometimes, also referred by its scientific name Allium sativum, contains substances, such as alliin, alliinase, allicin, S-allylcysteine, diallyl sulfide, allyl methyl trisulfide, and is a source of selenium. Today, there are many products that contain oil extracted from garlic.

Heart Diseases

Garlic oil decreases levels of low density lipids or bad cholesterol, which is helpful for certain types of heart disease. Most importantly, it also lowers the total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body. The chemicals present in it, promote formation of HDL cholesterol.


The clinical studies have established that the allyl sulfur, a chemical present in the garlic, can stem or inhibit the cancer development. Garlic oil benefits can be observed in prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer and stomach cancer. It has the ability to inhibit or prevent colon cancer.

Blood Pressure

Garlic oil can be used to provide relief to the patients suffering from the high blood pressure by lowering it. It does have the capacity to act as a blood thinner and is known to successfully unclog the blood vessels and prevent atherosclerosis.
Its ability to make the blood thinner is important for avoiding stroke and thrombosis. Ingestion of garlic oil also helps in lowering the blood sugar levels.


Garlic oil supplement can be ingested to treat infections caused by bacteria and fungus because of the antifungal and antibacterial properties of the garlic. It can be especially used to treat staph infections (MRSA) and candidiasis due to yeast infections.
Using garlic oil for ear infections or common cold and sinus infections can prove helpful. Its role as an antioxidant enables us to get rid of the free radicals, which can disturb metabolic activities and can cause cancer. Chemicals present in garlic oil are also known to strengthen the immune system and inhibit the spread of cancer cells.
You can also consume garlic to remove toxic substances, such as lead and mercury from your body. If you are already using a prescribed aspirin or warfarin, then don't take garlic supplements without taking the advice of your doctor. Both of these are well-known blood thinners. The same advice stands true for patients suffering from hemophilia.
