Easing Coughs Naturally

Puja Lalwani
Irritating coughs can be easily curbed by utilizing some natural remedies with ingredients right from the home. Some simple remedies have been mentioned here.
Coughs are of different types, but whichever one you have been afflicted by, it can get extremely irritating. The soreness and sheer exhaustion from coughing is something all of us cannot tolerate. Coughs usually run their course for a period of seven to ten days.
Any methods that are used to treat them usually provide only temporary and not permanent relief. A cough will naturally stop after it has run its course. Instead of trying cough syrups that tend to make you drowsy, try a few methods of easing coughs naturally, that do not have any side effects. Here are some simple ones for you.

Drink Lots of Fluids

While water is what we are talking about here, there are several other fluids that can help soothe a cough that causes you to cough out phlegm or even one that is caused by a scratchy throat. Drink lukewarm water, herbal teas such as green tea with a dash of lemon juice, and even clear soups such as those made of chicken or vegetables.
Not only will the warmth of these drinks make you feel better, the nutrients in each of these have the capacity to reduce the effects of your cough. Such drinks can also be administered to children safely. However, ensure you monitor the amount of green tea you give to a child.
One small cup a day till the cough is relieved is enough. This is because green tea contains caffeine and can function as a stimulant.

Take Honey and Ginger

Take two teaspoons of honey and heat is slightly. Add to it one teaspoon of ginger juice, and one quarter of a teaspoon of black pepper. Consume it while hot. The pepper, honey, and ginger will work together to loosen the mucus that is causing the cough and help you feel much better.
Do not give honey to infants below one year and to children older than that, do not give more than one teaspoon. Adjust the ratio of ginger and pepper accordingly.

Inhale Eucalyptus Vapors

Eucalyptus extract when combined with steam can help sooth a cough. In a large pan of hot water, add a few drops of eucalyptus extract. Place a towel over your head and inhale the vapors until the steam dies down. You may do this for children too; however, ensure you keep a watch on the process because the steam can cause burns.
You may also use a vaporizer for younger children to keep them safe from burns and the like. If you cannot find eucalyptus extract simply put a small dollop of Vicks Vaporub in the hot water and inhale.

Gargle with Salt Water

This is one of the most traditional and effective remedies for a cough. Take some warm water and add half a teaspoon of salt to it. Gargle with this salt and find yourself feeling much better. You can do this about two to three times in a day to increase its effectiveness. Children can also follow this remedy safely.

Use Garlic as an Antibiotic

Swallow a whole clove of garlic with a glass of water, just like a tablet, before sleeping at night and once in the morning. Garlic works as a natural antibiotic, so if you have an infection that is causing the cough you will definitely find yourself relieved. This method also works well for children.
These remedies should be able to provide some relief from the cough. When suffering from a cough it is best not to smoke or have a lot of fried food. These just irritate the throat and worsen the condition. Finally, if your cough just won't go, do consult a doctor.
In some cases a cough may be a symptom of some other health condition that you cannot pinpoint. A doctor will find the root cause of the problem and deal with it accordingly. Do not ignore a persistent cough.
