Dry cough can be irritating for you as well as others around you. Only a proper remedy can provide you some relief from incessant coughing. This Story discusses a few remedies for the same.
Cough is a way of body's reaction to different types of irritants that lead to an inflammation of throat, larynx, bronchial tubes, lungs, etc. The causes of dry cough can be innumerable, from allergies, asthma, to infections and exposures to chemicals. Dry cough induces an urge to cough and when you do, you end up coughing more. During such times, drinking a glass of water is the best remedy. Besides, there are a few remedies that can relieve you from incessant coughing.

Hot Beverages

The steam that erupts from hot beverages such as tea or soups soothes the irritation in the throat and gives you some relief. Adding a spoonful of honey and a pinch of turmeric in a piping hot glass of milk coats the lining of the larynx and soothes the inflammation. This is a great remedy for dry cough that aggravates at night. This concoction also induces a deep sleep.

Steam Therapy

Standing in a hot shower for about 15 minutes works great for your irritated throat. The steam from the hot water hydrates the throat, and thereby reduces coughing. Alternatively, you can also harness the therapeutic uses of steam by directly inhaling the steam erupting from hot water.

Humidifier

The main cause of dry cough is extra dry air with very less humidity. Winter is the season when it worsens due to lack of moisture in the air. Therefore, use a good humidifier to keep dry air at bay.

Cider Vinegar

Cider vinegar reduces the inflammation in the throat and upper respiratory tract, thus eliminating dry cough. Add a couple of spoonfuls of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. You may have to keep adding it until you achieve a desired taste. Slowly sip it whenever there is an urge to cough.

Ginger

Take a small piece of ginger and peel it. Slowly chew it until the urge to cough disappears completely. This is an effective home remedy which works in most cases. However, given the fierce properties of ginger, care should be taken that you consume it in small proportions only.

Throat Lozenges

Throat lozenges or peppermint candies provide an instant but temporary relief from dry cough. You can make some lozenges at home yourself. Grind some black pepper and caraway seeds, and mix them with a pinch of salt. Make them into small balls and suck them until the coughing urge vanishes.

Tips

  • Gargle with some spinach juice mixed in warm water. Drinking this juice also helps relieve dry cough.
  • Marjoram is considered a beneficial remedy. It eases the inflammation and relieves the throat irritation.
  • Soak a few almonds in water and let it stay overnight. Peel off the brown skin next morning and eat them.
  • Always carry a bottle of water along whenever you are required to talk for a long time.
  • Juice of raw onion mixed with honey kept for a few days also helps get rid of dry cough.
  • Consume some crushed basil leaves with a pinch of turmeric added to it.
Do not try to cure dry cough with the help of over the counter medications. These medicines only suppress the symptoms and do not address the underlying cause. The aforementioned remedies are the best and the safest options to treat dry cough.
