Wellness Through Acupressure Mats

Azmin Taraporewala
Acupressure uses the same technique as acupuncture to promote relaxation and treat various disorders. The use of an acupressure mat plays an important role in this, as it enhances the overall relaxing and healing effect of the acupressure technique.
Acupressure is a traditional practice which originated in China. This practice involves applying pressure on specific parts of the body in order to treat certain conditions. It is also considered as a good option for a body massage session. Various massage centers incorporate it as a method to relieve stress in order to serve their clients better.

Acupressure

Traditional Chinese medicine thoroughly believes in the concept of the "flow of life force" referred to as 'chi' or 'qi', which maintains one's health. If this flow is interrupted, one's health can suffer and affect certain specific part of the body, which may make the organ susceptible to weakness. Chi means the air we breathe, and it is the most essential component that runs through the human body.
Chi flows through various paths in the body, and is transported through various organs in their own unique ways. When a person approaches an acupressure practitioner with a specific complaint, the expert looks for the pathway which has a problem.

The practitioner applies appropriate pressure on the body parts, where the meridians or the pathways are located. These body parts have certain pressure points, which when pressed, regulate the body function and provide relief.

How does an Acupressure Mat work?

An acupressure session is conducted with the person resting on his back on a spike mat. It plays an important role in the process of catharsis (process of purification of emotions). Although, the appearance of the acupressure mat has changed over time, the principle on which it functions has remained the same. A contemporary mat has a rubber pad, that is made of foam, cotton, and plastic discs embedded in the sac. These discs have sharp edges and spikes.
The wellness mat is regarded with several different names such as Acupressure mat, Swedish Acupressure mat, Spike mat, Pressure Relief Mat, Fakir mat, and Shakti mat. When an individual lies on this mat, the spikes embedded in the mat submissively prick the body, thereby activating the release of two hormones called endorphins and oxytocin. Endorphin acts as a natural painkiller and oxytocin releases hormones that relieve stress and inhibit depression, promoting a 'feel good' factor.
